There are a few reasons why dogs might spin or circle around before they settle down to lie down. One reason might be that they’re trying to flatten out their bedding or grassy area so that it’s more comfortable. Another possibility is that they’re trying to find the perfect spot in which to lie down.
Another reason might be that circling is a way for dogs to realign their body in a comfortable position. When they circle, they’re able to adjust their legs and body so that they’re perfectly comfortable before lying down.
Finally, some experts believe that circling is a throwback to a dog’s wild ancestors. In the wild, dogs would circle around their prey before settling in for the kill. While our domesticated dogs don’t need to worry about killing their prey, the instinct to circle might still be there.
